Set Against a Forested Ravine in North Toronto: A Thoughtful Modern Renovation

Nestled against a forested ravine in North Toronto, this residence underwent a complete transformation to meet the needs of a growing young family.

Originally designed by an architect in the 1970s, the home retained much of its original condition and required both technical modernization and aesthetic renewal. The renovation respected the home’s architectural heritage—characterized by its distinctive roofline and integration with the landscape—while thoughtfully updating its materials, detailing, and surrounding environment for contemporary living.

The comprehensive upgrades included a new roof, high-performance windows, and enhanced insulation throughout the building envelope. Inside, the layout was reconfigured and modernized with refined finishes and custom landscaping to complement the natural setting. A cohesive palette of white oak, natural stone, soft blues, and muted greys contributes to the home’s calm and welcoming atmosphere.

The homeowners envisioned a bright, comfortable space to raise their family, with the flexibility to host social gatherings and extended family events. The main floor was redesigned to orient the principal living spaces toward the ravine, seamlessly connecting the interior with nature. Expansive glazing opens onto a large deck with a built-in BBQ area, ideal for outdoor entertaining. The kitchen features a generous island and a built-in banquette for casual family meals. A sculptural Sans Souci chandelier composed of delicate glass leaves adds a touch of glamour and intimacy, while a double-sided fireplace leads into the formal dining room, which comfortably accommodates ten guests.

Natural light was introduced through strategically placed skylights, brightening the front foyer and highlighting the elegant staircase, which ascends to a second-floor hallway overlooking the entry below. Adjacent to the foyer, a cozy sitting room—anchored by a wood-burning fireplace and a grand piano—offers views to the front yard and a quiet space to relax.

Additional features on the main floor include a stylish powder room, a private home office, and a well-appointed mudroom with abundant storage and direct access to the garage. The garage was outfitted to include a dog wash for the beloved family pet.

Upstairs, the primary suite offers a luxurious retreat complete with a spa-inspired bathroom, a walk-in closet, and access to a restored private porch. Outfitted with a wood stove, this covered outdoor space extends seasonal use and provides a tranquil reading nook immersed in the surrounding forest. Three additional bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom, a spacious laundry room, and additional storage complete the upper level.
A separate walk-out at the side of the house leads to a fully outfitted in-law suite in the basement, which includes a catering kitchen, a family room, and a gym area—creating a self-contained, flexible living space.

This project exemplifies a respectful and refined renovation, combining architectural preservation with thoughtful modern enhancements tailored to the rhythms of contemporary family life.
