Nestled along the pristine shores of Chandos Lake, this contemporary lakefront home was designed as a dream retreat for clients who envisioned a refined, nature-connected lifestyle. Having followed our work on social media—and drawn inspiration from several of our nearby projects—the clients approached us shortly after acquiring one of the newly created lots along the water, ready to begin designing their ideal year-round residence.

Their vision was ambitious and deeply personal: a modern, light-filled home that would feel purposefully placed within the natural landscape—offering all the comforts of urban living while embracing the quiet beauty of the wilderness. They requested a four-bedroom layout with three bathrooms, approximately 3,000 square feet of interior living space, an integrated two-car garage, and expansive outdoor areas to take in the panoramic views.

The program included a gourmet kitchen for hosting, an open-concept living and dining space anchored by a fireplace, a private office, a large studio space with abundant natural light, a yoga room, a spa-inspired bathroom with steam shower, and a functional mudroom with direct access to the lake.

The design response was both elegant and site-sensitive. Working closely with the natural contours and orientation of the land, we developed a composition of two distinct volumes connected by a dramatic two-storey glass breezeway. The main cottage volume faces the lake, housing the primary living spaces, including a chef’s kitchen with custom millwork and stone surfaces, a spacious dining area, and a living room with floor-to-ceiling glazing. A screened porch with a wood stove extends the living area outdoors, while the primary suite enjoys sweeping lake views from both the bedroom and ensuite soaker tub. A mudroom and powder room—complete with exterior access—provide seamless indoor-outdoor living.

A sculptural staircase framed by a vertical wood screen links the main level to the second floor, where three additional bedrooms, a full bath, and a dedicated home office are located. The office opens onto a rooftop deck above the screened porch—perfect for stargazing or quiet retreat.

The lower walk-out level accommodates a spacious recreation room, additional bathroom, utility room, and ample storage. The breezeway, featuring a glass floor and views in both directions, creates a dramatic connection to the second volume—an oversized garage with a light-filled studio space above. This flexible, lofty area is wrapped by a corner deck and designed to support a range of creative uses.

The interior palette emphasizes brightness and simplicity: white walls, black-framed windows, and wide-plank oak flooring create a modern yet welcoming atmosphere. Each bathroom features luxurious finishes, from natural stone surfaces to curated high-end fixtures. The exterior cladding, a refined combination of natural wood and matte black siding, allows the home to quietly integrate into the forested surroundings.

A generous dock at the shoreline and a lakeside firepit complete the outdoor experience, encouraging year-round enjoyment of the property.

Now fully settled into their new home, the clients—having relocated from a large urban centre—cherish the tranquility of lakefront living. With remote work, daily forest walks with their dog, and summer afternoons spent swimming or boating, the Winter’s Bay Lake House is more than just a residence—it’s a retreat that reflects their lifestyle, values, and connection to nature.
