Modern Farmhouse in The Beach
Designed for longtime residents of Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood looking to build a comfortable, modern home to raise their young family, this three-storey home is nestled into the neighbourhood, a short walk from Lake Ontario.
Spacious and full of light, the owners wanted their home to be bright, yet peaceful and serene, suitable for hosting family and friends, with everything in its place. They wanted a home to grow into, that would also be timeless and durable with a casual, beach-like feel, reflective of its environs.
The colour palette is consistent throughout, creating a calm, comfortable environment. White Oak and stone are complemented with soft blues and warm greys of the rugs and furnishings. Black framed windows, factory-style doors and accents, along with carefully selected light fixtures are a soft, modern complement to the more traditional form of the home.
The main-floor home office faces the front of the home off the formal entrance, which was arranged to provide privacy from the street.
The main floor features a large kitchen with a walk-in pantry, and a family room with a fireplace, that opens to the landscaped yard. The formal dining room is both grand and intimate, with high ceilings brought down by an assemblage of large blown-glass lights, next to the stairs which wind through the home. There is a mudroom off the attached garage with ample closet space and cubbies to keep coats, shoes, sporting equipment and knapsacks organized. The powder room was designed to impress: a concrete sink sits atop a stone vanity against a fluted oak wall. The cabana in the yard provides shelter to the BBQ area and a cozy seating area warmed by a fireplace when the weather is cool.
The cathedral-like windows provide the guest room with a view of the lake and plenty of light during the day. Children’s bedrooms face the backyard, for added privacy and quiet from the street.
The third floor provides a spa-like retreat for the owners, with a luxurious bathroom, his and hers walk-in closets and a bedroom with a balcony that feels like a perch in the trees. A second home office faces the street. Skylights light the stairwell, bringing natural light into the centre of the home.
Designed for modern living, this home provides a respite from the hustle and bustle of life in Toronto.
